This has been a major issue of contention amongst my group of friends for some time. My best friend in particular is anxiously awaiting her engagement ring, but has told her boyfriend under no circumstances should he propose on “typical” days. So far we’ve made it through her birthday, Christmas and New Years with no proposal, but as Valentines Day looms will he respect her wishes or get down on one knee.

People seem quite divided on whether or not proposing on a holiday is romantic and fabulous or just plain cliché. Where do you stand? I personally would love to be whisked away somewhere fabulous, and be completely surprised. Call me traditional but I also think it’s essential to ask for Dad’s permission for his daughters hand. It just adds that extra traditional charm in a world where tradition is often lost.
While traditionally it has been left up to the man to propose to the woman, times are changing and many more woman are stepping up to the plate and asking their guy to take the plunge. This wasn’t always acceptable, in days past woman were allowed to propose but one day every 4 years, February 29. This tradition is believed to have started in 5th century Ireland when St. Bridget complained to St. Patrick about women having to wait for so long for a man to propose. According to legend, St. Patrick said the yearning females could propose on this one day in February during the leap year.
On this side of the pond, Sadie Hawkins day is celebrated November 15th. “In Li’l Abner, Sadie Hawkins was the daughter of one of Dogpatch’s earliest settlers, Hekzebiah Hawkins. The “homeliest gal in all them hills”, she grew frantic waiting for suitors to come a-courtin’. When she reached the age of 35, still a spinster, her father was even more frantic - about Sadie living at home for the rest of his life. In desperation, he called together all the unmarried men of Dogpatch and declared it “Sadie Hawkins Day”. Specifically, a foot race was decreed, with Sadie in hot pursuit of the town’s eligible bachelors - and matrimony as the consequence.” – Wikipedia
So all you ladies sick of waiting for your guy to get up the nerve, follow the leads of these ladies and do it yourself! Happy proposing!
